Luxe Singapore Cafe: Awesome brunch place

$

After learning that Luxe, the famed Sydney Cafe which opened a branch in Singapore, had updated their menu, I went to check it out and I did not regret it one bit. In fact, after that, I returned for another session because it was just too lovely for me not to think about it again. Read on to find out what I had during my two recent visits there.
As its name suggests, Luxe is luxurious, but it is not a luxury that is out of everyday reach; the restaurant focuses on quality product and premium service, but in an unpretentious manner that is always inclusive. It appeals to diners looking for not just a meal, but an experience. Luxe’s focus is on creating an approachable environment that offers amazing all-day dining — be it brunch on Sunday, lunch on Thursday, or dinner and drinks on Friday night — for anybody and everybody. - Luxe Website

LET'S EAT!
Before we start, can I just say that I love the surroundings? So comfortable and and spacious. Makes it a lovely place to hang out in the morning.
During my two visits there, I had a cafe latte ($5) and also tried their Long Black ($4). Both were smooth, but more of medium-bodied, I reckon? For me, I like full-bodied coffees though. Just a matter of preference.
My friend had the mocha ($5) and she loved it.
Aussie Breakfast ($26) is a little pricey, but the huge serving pretty much makes up for the wallet pain. The dish is delivered to you with full on scrambled eggs, bacon, cumin roast tomato, pork & fennel sausages, avocado and mushrooms. Creamy butter (which might be easily well mistaken as mayonnaise) is generously served on a smaller dish bowl.
Laying it out nicely on top of the toast and then biting into it reminds me why this visit is worth every muscle I used to pull myself out of bed on a Sunday morning to have it.
During the first visit, we went and had the Eggs Royale Smoked Salon ($20). However, we changed the Eggs Royale to scrambled eggs instead, and added sausages ($6) to the dish.
The scrambled eggs were really awesome and I savored every bite. On my second visit with another friend, I had to order it again, this time, for reals. Without changing anything. And this is how it really looks like!
Please, let it flow.
We also had the Ricotta Hotcake with Berries, exploding candy and maple syrup ($20), and I loved this so much even though it was just 1 hotcake. I didn't really taste the exploding candy, however, this is still one of the best hotcakes I've ever eaten.
Still, you might find it expensive paying $20 for a single hotcake. I will order this again if my hotcake craving kicks in.
As you know, I love brunch, and I'm pretty glad to have found a place where I can return for my favourite meal of the weekend.

If you're like me, but you usually can't see yourself waking up in time for brunch, you'll be pleased to know that Luxe recently extended their brunch timings to 3pm.

Cato Singapore

Here we are at Cato Singapore, a new bar-cum-restaurant born in September 2015. Keeping to its shophouse, retro pub style on the second floor, that's where we enjoyed the evening with good drinks.
The picture above shows the second floor. The first floor, boasts a more modern black and white theme. (Sorry, didn't manage to get any pictures.)

Let it flow.

This is one beer I would highly recommend. Very awesome, even for someone like me, who doesn't take much beer.
Modern Times Beer Black House Coffee Stout

Prawn bisque with homemade cod fishball & coriander leaf ($12), listed under the Tapas menu, is flavourful. The bowl looks small because this is a tasting portion. The actual portion is bigger. Anyway, this was pretty comforting and a good starter to whip up your appetite.
Some interesting finger food included the Garlic Fries ($8), the Crispy squid in thai style glaze ($12) and Cato Wings in homemade chilli glaze ($15).
The squid and the wings are table favourites.

Chilli lovers, you will find the Chicken Noodle Salad ($16) a delight, Ghost Chilli seasoned noodles paired with Chinese tea smoked chicken and fresh greens. The ghost chilli makes it interestingly spicy.
There is also a healthier option available - Acai Cured Salmon ($18). Acai berries were freshly purchased from the Amazon, where Acai sprouts from. The portion was a tad small, we should take cue from the categorisation from the menu. Yes, this is parked under appetisers and probably would make a good one as it is topped with a light and refreshing calamansi creme fraiche.
Moving on to the mains, they have interesting ones like Aunty Jasmine's Fish Curry ($25) and the Steam Baked Pork Cheek ($28).
They serve the curry separate in a pitcher and will pour it in front of you. The dish is a Asian-Western fusion, combining a homemade family recipe for the indian-style curry and a New Zealand Ling Fish.
The pork cheek is tender, sealed in 'Fata' cooking foil and steam-baked in a Port Wine Mustard sauce together with veggies.
We also got to try the only 2 desserts served on the menu: Valrhona warm pistachio chocolate cake ($14) and the Papaya Nougat Glace ($14).

The glace is homemade, marrying the nougat and fresh papaya chunks and caramelised almonds. We saw many customers enjoying this dish and is probably one of the more special desserts they have to offer here.
The chocolate cake was rich, in fact, a little too rich for my liking. But chocolate lovers, this might just be your thing. This lava cake, however, did not flow well when cut.

Overall, Cato would be a place where you would probably want to hang out if you would like to chill over some nice finger foods and taste their awesome alcoholic beverages.

LET'S EAT
We were glad to meet Executive Chef Low Hoe Kiat, who helms the kitchen crew at the restaurant.
Crab dishes were on a roe (roll)! There were not only classic favourites like the Singapore Chilli Crab and Salted Egg Yolk and Butter Crab, but also new creations like Stir Fried Crab with Jalapeno, as well as a Korean foodie's Kimchi Crab!
New this year is also a dish named Baby Crab Salad with Green Mango. This dish was inspired by Thailand, using a combination of tart mango and salty-sweet shrimp paste dressing as a lovely starter to your meal.

One of my favourites also has to be the Pumpkin Crab in Claypot, which is a delectable mix of lightly spiced, creamy golden-yellow gravy and sweet crab meat.
There are also other dinner selections from the buffet line, also for those who do not want to overeat crabs (seriously? Come on.)

The current buffet, named Asian Temptation Buffet, is available from 13 September to 13 December 2015.
Those who are looking for private function venues can also consider this restaurant, which can accommodate up to 130 guests, ideal for birthday celebrations, baby showers, company lunches and more.

V-Mina: Keeping your vajayjay healthy makes you happy!

Today is a little special, because I wish to share some products that help with women health. Your confidence sprouts from within, hence it is important that you take care of areas which make you feel that way - clean!

As females, our vajayjay is a highly sensitive area and is really important to our overall health and happiness! As Asians, we are usually more shy when it comes to issues like these, but if we stay in silence and don't learn about it, and without proper care and hygiene, it can affect us in many huge ways!
As you know, there are already quite a few brands on the pharmacy shelves, to help you with keeping a well-balanced vaginal ecosystem, which is vital for a healthy V-area. The normal vaginal pH is 3.8 to 4.2. When your vagina’s pH is outside of the normal range, a number of vaginal health problems may occur. Therefore, having quality feminine hygiene products with the right pH that are devoid of chemical deodorants or of antibiotic substances is important.

Many commercial feminine hygiene products contain synthetic materials such as SLES, SL/ALS, chlorine and so on, all of which can be extremely disruptive and harmful to health.

V-Mina’s range of Feminine Hygiene includes:
• Cleansing Mousse
• Lightening Intimate Gel
• Deodorant Intimate Mist
• Cleansing Wipes

V-Mina is the FIRST feminine hygiene product in Singapore clinically tested and proven to improve good micro-flora balance. It gives valuable benefits not only to healthy individuals who appreciate delicate care for their well-being, also to those who are prone to infections despite having done their regular cleansing.

V-Mina’s products have been clinically formulated to match the normal pH (4.0) of the external vaginal area, allowing thorough daily cleansing without the risk of dryness and irritation. And they do NOT contain SLS/SLES/ALS which will possibly cause irritation especially for those who have more sensitive skin. V-Mina’s range of products come with yogurt extracts too, with a key purpose of improving good micro-flora balance.

In a nutshell, here are the Clinically Tested & Proven Benefits of V-Mina:

• Improving good micro-flora balance.
• Natural anti-microbial.
• Facilitating healthy pH level (pH 4.0).
• Non-irritation, safe for daily use.

And as they say, Healthy V, Happy U!

Previously, I've tried Coast to Coast and liked it. Today I'm going to share with you on another product.

Products from Coast to Coast doesn't have any artificial colours, fragrances and no animal testing too! Best of all, they use natural and organic ingredients, and that works well for me.

The skincare range is divided into 3 main categories - Coastal, Rainforest and Outback. For me, I am under the Rainforest collection as it is for oily / combination skin.

Coastal: Normal, dry or sensitive skin
Outback: Dehydrated, dull or uneven skin

Details
Brand:
Coast to Coast

Product Name:
Pore Purifying Cleansing Water

Type:
Skincare, Makeup remover, Cleanser

Shade:
N.A.
Price:
SGD $39

Where to buy:
This clarifying cleansing water contains Lilly Pilly & Neroli. It perfectly eliminates makeup & impurities from the face & eyes, which help to cleanse your skin and prep it for your day or night skin care regime.

I love that Lilly Pilly has brilliant skin rejuvenating properties. Not only does it deliver excellent astringent properties, its high Vitamin C and fruit acid content helps to regenerate and protect skin cells, as well as promoting the production of Collagen and Elastin to visibly firm and brighten the overall appearance of the skin.

So how should you use this?

Place a cotton pad on the dispenser & press for two pumps. Swipe over eyes & face to remove makeup. Repeat with a fresh cotton pad if necessary. No rinsing required.

Look how clean it is! I gently pressed the cotton pad over the dirtied area for about 5 seconds before wiping away. That took away about 90% of the dirt! Second and a third final wipe actually removed all the dirt!

Overall, I liked the light texture and how clean the skin is after using it. Best part of it all?

No need to rinse! Just swipe and go, best companion for travel!

Lean Bento: Healthy food made easy for office workers!

With many healthy bento options available for corporate workers, Lean Bento is another one to consider in the recent rave for healthy foods.

Yes, we ordered for the entire department!
To order, you can simply do that through their website. Ordering proved to be a straightforward and simple process, which I was pretty glad.
Muslim friends might also be glad to know that Lean Bento has recently been officially certified along with the Halal certification. Deliveries require at least your orders to be successfully submitted to them at least 1 working day in advance.

The delivery reached slightly before my fixed timing but I was fine with it. The sets were also nicely packed, content was filled to the brim.

LET'S EAT!

My colleague ordered the Arrabbiata Chicken Breast ($12.90). It contained patties made from grounded chicken breast meat, marinated with Italian herbs and spices and baked under low heat. The meal, listed under the High Protein Bentos, was a balanced one as she had her meats and loads of fiber.
Love the bouncy, wobbly egg!
For me, I ordered the mushroom chicken noodles ($14.50), under the Low-Carb Noodle Bowls section, which the fat-trimmed chunks of chicken proved to be tasty and succulent. There was in fact, too much chicken pieces, but I'm not complaining. I also found in it a pleasure to break the runny, wobbly onsen egg.
The meats and vegetables (broccoli), were good.
What I didn't like about it was the the noodles. According to them, the noodles are zero-carb yam-fibre noodles, but it had a pretty weird texture, unfortunately. I get the thing about chewy consistency for noodles, but this was just not it. At least not the good kind of chewy.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Bathing Soap: Review

$

0
Things that we buy nowadays are filled with so many stuff that's bad for our bodies, skin and health. The world of today sees many people sharing their skin care concerns or conditions, genetically or just, you know, made from the society of today - environmental, food allergies or simply, stress.

Today, I would like to introduce you a product that might just address these concerns today.

Ta-da! Introducing... Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap, by Nature's Glory!

Wait up! Who exactly is Dr. Bronner?
Emmanuel Bronner, a third generation German-Jewish master soap-maker, brought the family's old world soap recipes to the US in the late 1920's and established what has become the top-selling natural brand of liquid and bar soaps in America. In addition to producing an exceptional lather and smooth after-feel, our soaps support fair trade, organic agriculture and healthy environment. Dr. Bronner passed away peacefully on March 7th of 1997. The business continues to be run by the Bronner family with no break in continuity. Over 100 acres of Dr. Bronner's beloved Rain Forest was donated by his family to the Boys and Girls clubs of San Diego Country, California. Underprivileged children can now camp under the stars within sight of Mt. Palomar which is often mentioned in the "Moral of ABC". - excerpt extracted from Nature Glory's website.

Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Unscented Baby-Mild Soap (16oz or 473 ml, S$18.90)
This one is meant for those that have sensitive skin or skin that is prone to allergies, as it is so gentle that it can even be used for newborn babies! It is totally unscented, has zero chemical additives, synthetic fragrances, or other harsh chemicals that will trigger an allergy. And also, no parabens! Made with pure & organic extra virgin coconut, olive and jojoba oils.

Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Tea Tree Soap Infected Skin (16oz or 473 ml, S$18.90)
Bacterial infections or dandruff? This bottle is meant for your use. Made with tea tree oil, or melaleuca oil, this soap bottle contains the soap that will help protect you against common skin infections, including acne and oily skin, as it has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Pimples? No more!

Brand claims:
Dr.Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soaps have up to 4x more concentrated than other brands of “liquid soaps”.

Other than saving your skin, they are also for saving the world. All cylinder bottles are made from 100% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic bottles!

Personally, I like that it's so liquidy and moisturising. The skin feels so well moisturised but yet, clean after use. When I tried the Tea tree oil soap, I must share that the tea tree oil scent was quite strong.

The purity of the source of these soaps contributes to its qualities and scents, as the soaps themselves contain a relatively large volume of high quality grade essential oils - about 20ml in 1 litre! That's pretty intensive!

The prices I shared above are for 16oz or 473ml. Other sizes include:
2oz, $5.50
8oz, $11.90
32oz, $30.80
1gallon, $109
5 gallons, $450

Yomeishu, the wine which preserves life

$
0
0
Yomeishu, also known as Yang Ming Jiu or 养名酒, literally means 'wine that preserves life'. First produced in Japan in year 1602 (yes, it's been 413 years and still going strong!), the drink is popular among people who seek better health.

The wine is manufactured by soaking medicinal herbs in a sweet and mellow wine base. There are 14 main herbs that go into the Yomeishu concoction. The process of soaking these herbs within the wine will release the herb's curative actions.

The wine is made at the Komagane Plane in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. The climate of this region is blessed with clean air and water, making it the best location for producing the Yomeishu effects which it is required for.

What are the benefits of the wine?
Mainly, the wine encourages a good boost to blood circulation, which is an important part of your body's overall function and health.

Why is boosting blood circulation important?
To understand why boosting your blood circulation is important, you should also understand how your body functions. Your heart pumps blood through blood vessels in your circulation system. The red blood cells will carry oxygen to your body's vital oxygen, providing vitality and energy. When your circulation system and vital organs are able to work hand-in-hand, this means you will have sufficient blood flow. People are seeing an increase in many conditions which contributes to the decrease of blood circulation, such as diabetes - which affects even young people in our society today (mostly due to poor eating habits!).

Why should I consider taking Yomeishu?
As you know, the efficacy of the wine lies in its ability to help boost blood circulation. When this happens, it helps to increase blood flow within the body and helps promote cell growth and organ function. Even your skin (yes, girls!) also will reap benefits from it, as it is better able to fight off bacteria and infection.

Once opened, you don't have to rush to finish it. Drink sparingly till the whole bottle is gone! There is no time limit and remember, you are not in a competition so don't have to rush through it!

To best preserve the wine, always cap the bottle tightly and avoid direct sunlight, as per all other alcohols.

How to take Yomeishu?
Adults can take about 20ml, 3 times daily, before meals and/or at bedtime. There are markings on the cup (which comes with the wine bottle) which will help you determine the required amount to drink.

Can you increase or decrease the dosage?
It depends on your body condition. Just note that overdosage should be prevented. Yomeishu's special point is how it helps promote action on blood circulation. And that should be taken into consideration as well, for example, for those with conditions, such as high blood pressure, etc.

Yomeishu is available at all major supermarkets. For more information on the product, visit http://www.yomeishu.co.jp/english/faq/.
As with all health tonics and products, be advised to follow instructions in how you should take the drink.

As I always like to tell my friends, tonics and herbs are very powerful if taken right. Yomeishu is beneficial if you follow instructions and take it right, too. While Yomeishu complements and boosts your results in better health, you should also be mindful of your daily diet intake to ensure best overall results.

If you are not sure, always check with your physician first.

Mint Medical Aesthetics: Skin Laser and Hydra Clear Peel Medi-Facial for clearer skin

$

So, just before my Korea trip, I set out to do a simple skin laser and hydra clear peel medi-facial by Mint Medical Aesthetics, located near my office building, during lunchtime.

This is part of an aesthetics programme for the skin which also combines their technology with award-winning skincare Dermagold to achieve optimal results. Medi-facials combos can be customised by the doctor for each individual according to skin types and needs.

What I did:

Skin Laser (by lady doctors) – empowered by Korean technology
1. A non-invasive treatment with no downtime.
2. Lunchtime procedure that takes only about 5 minutes to do

Hydra Clear Peel (15-20min)
1. This uses a Korean technology and does a painless extraction
2. Suitable for all skin types.
3. Helps to unclog congested and enlarged pores, deep pore cleansing, remove dead cells and stimulate new cell growth
4. Nourishes skin with anti-oxidants, nutrients to restore skin balance and hydration

The procedure:
1.      Cleanse
2. Exfoliate and detox the skin with a wonderful derma-cocktail of lactic acid, algae, green tea, glucosamine and yeast extract
3. Extraction (you thought it'll be yikes, but it ended up being PAINLESS!)
4. Nourishment of the skin with a lovely derma-mix containing anti-oxidants and vitamins that restore skin balance, hydration, reduce wrinkles, improve skin healing.

The entire treatment (Laser and the Hydra peel) really only took about 30 minutes all in all!

Good for:
- Busy people who don't have much time to go through 1 or 2-hour long facials
- Those who cannot take pain from blackhead extractions

It only needs to be done once or twice a month (depending on your skin condition), a simple upkeep for lovely skin.

Some benefits of the technology:
- Refines your pores
- Whitens and brightens skin
- Improves skin tone
- Reduces acne outbreaks, blemishes and marks on your skin
- Stimulates collagen

Note: All photos in this post are non-edited and are without 'beauty' mode!

Before the facial (this is without makeup and filter) - I have dull skin and enlarged pores!

Right after the facial... (also without makeup and filter.)
As you can see, my skin is visibly lighter and brighter than before!

3 hours after the facial...

6 hours after the facial...

Skin is still visibly clearer, pores are smaller and cleaner, even after 6 hours!

If you are worried that you'll be going to a social function or back to work after that, no worries, because the treatment has no downtime and it also ends off with application of Dermagold award-winning Hydra Recovery Gel and also a Dermagold sunblock.

FYI, they are currently having a promotion for the DermaGlow Medi-facial programme that goes for $688+, that includes:
- 3x skin laser
- 3x ClearLight Tx (for photorejuvenation)
- 3x Hydra Clear Peel
- 3x Customised ampoules

Award-winning DermaGold goes online!

April BoriBap 사월에보리밥

I was waiting to board the train to Naju at Yongsan station, and had about 1 hour to waste. I did not want to just sit around, and I thought I better have a proper meal before starting a 4-hour train ride. Hence, I was just walking around the station before I noticed April BoriBap (aka Sawol e bori bap).
Surroundings. Clean and bright. It was almost empty as I went early, about 11.30am.
The restaurant was almost empty as I was early, took my seat near the entrance as it was only 11.30am. But shortly, the restaurant got busy once it hit 11.45am. Most diners were office workers, who probably worked around the area.

Lone diners would proceed to the inner hall, so they don't have to be near the entrance. But I was cool with being alone, so I just took my seat near the entrance. It was easier for me to manage as well, because I had my luggage with me.
Open the side of the table to reveal the chopsticks, spoons and tissue paper.

LET'S EAT
A lady pushes a trolley over, containing my meal and the horde of side dishes.
Most of them were vegetables, no meat. Yet, they were flavourful.
A simple and tasty doenjang jjigae (된장찌개, fermented bean paste stew) which came with the meal. Doenjang-jjigae, is mainly made with the main ingredient - fermented bean paste (doenjang) - as well as tofu and vegetables.
I ordered the Barley Rice Set Meal (8,500 won, 보리밥정식).
It came together with a heap of various cooked vegetables and barley rice.
Put in all the red paste and the vegetables on the rice and mix well.
There you have it. It's a flavourful and healthy meal as it is mostly made up of vegetables. Mostly cooked with fermented bean paste (doenjang) as well, the flavour leans toward the saltier end.
If you eat this and also drink the fermented bean paste stew, it is a perfect marriage between the two, resulting in great taste.

Andong Zzimdak 안동찜닭 (Singapore)

Andong Zzimdak is here in Singapore! Frequent travellers to South Korea would have heard or even tried this popular spicy chicken dish, hence, Zzimdak lovers, bask in excitement!
Brought to you by the same team who brought the popular Yoogane to Singapore, they are determined to bring the original taste of Korea to the little red dot. Great for us!

Andong Zzimdak is also literally translated to Andong's Braised Chicken. They usually braise the chicken pieces (which are its star ingredient) with other vegetables, like potato, noodles, onion, ginger and carrot, marinated in ganjang sauce (Korean fermented soy sauce). It will result in a tender tasting chicken which will also carry the spiciness that comes with the sauce.

LET'S EAT
Must-try banchan (side dishes) - Danmuji and Kimchi
When you eat the chicken, don't forget to eat it with the danmuji  (aka 단무지, yellow pickled radish). This radish is usually served with chicken dishes as they complement each other.

Hot drinks are served in a simple andong zzimdak cup.

We tried the both hot and cold version of the Korean citron tea. Very comforting!
Try out some of their side dishes as well! I thought the most interesting one was the mini seafood pancakes.
Chicken Karaage ($9.90) 치킨

Mini Seafood Pancake ($9.90) 미니해물전
Spicy Dokboki / Spicy Rice Cake ($9.90) 매운 떡볶이

We ordered one large sized boneless jjimdak (because we are lazy to eat with bones, haha) and another large seafood jjimdak as well.

Prices for the jjimdak can range from SGD$45.90 to $65.90, depending on what you order as well as the size. The medium sized plates can feed about 2-3 pax, whereas the large plate can feed 3-4 people.
Boneless jjimdak 뼈없는 찜닭 (left) and seafood jjimdak 해물찜닭  (right)
The plate is huge!

Each jjimdak plate is served with a pair of scissors, so you can cut up the thick and chewy sweet potato noodles that is buried under a generous serving of chicken pieces.
I love these noodles. Chewy and tasty after being cooked together with the spicy ganjang (Korean soy sauce)-based sauce.  Yums!
Most Singaporeans can take the spice, so go for it! If you really can't, you can ask the staff to tune down the spiciness level for you. Those who haven't tried it, you probably should, because this would probably be the closest thing you can get to the ones in South Korea.

Makeup remover review: Jeju Sparkling Cleansing Series (제주 탄산 클렌징)

Recently, I got to know of a really good makeup remover from Nature Republic. It's called the Jeju Sparkling Cleansing series (네이처리퍼블릭 제주 탄산 메이크업 클렌징). I got the remover tissues as well as the water.

Details
Brand:
Nature Republic 네이처리퍼블릭

Product Name:
Jeju Sparkling Cleansing Tissue (제주 탄산 클렌징 티슈)
Jeju Sparkling Cleansing Water (제주 탄산 클렌징워터)

Type:
Skincare, Makeup remover

Shade:
Nil
Price:
Cleansing water (15,000won)
Cleansing Tissue (5,500won)

Where to buy:
Nature Republic, South Korea

First up: the remover tissue.
It is easy to carry around, and just convenient to use. 1 pack has 50 sheets.
I use it to clean the left side of my face first. It feels a little 'prickly', though I'm not sure why. But my skin feels fine after use, and there was no negative reaction. I don't feel this with the cleansing water, though. Just don't use directly it on the eyes and mouth!
After that, follow with a foaming cleanser and water for thorough cleansing. Makeup seems to be removed well.
My face looks clean!
This cleanser contains carbonic water from Jeju Mountain Sanbang Springs, which functions as both a makeup remover and a facial cleanser and eliminates skin impurities requiring no additional facial wash.

It comes in a big size, 510ml, and only costs an approx SGD$18, including an entire row of free cotton pads!
This product also got the 'Get it Beauty' stamp (겟잇뷰티) a South Korean beauty programme.
Now to cleanse the right side of the face: Fill up the cotton pad with the cleansing water and just swipe on your skin.
Dirt is mostly removed!
Skin feels and looks clean, no additional makeup residue after use!

Verdict
But I did feel that the cleansing water did an even better job. However, if you are travelling, the makeup cleansing tissues could be the perfect product for you, as it is portable and light to carry around!

In summary, I love this cleansing line from Nature Republic!

Beauty note:
- My skin is combination skin (oily)

Beauty disclaimer:
- Before using / testing any beauty products, I recommend you do a patch test first to find out if it suits your skin, because not every product suits every skin. :)

I first came to 55 Beonji Ramyon (55 번지 라면) last April 2014. I enjoyed their noodles and because my friends craved for jjamppong (짬뽕, spicy noodle soup), I brought them to this restaurant.

When you are nearing the restaurant, you might wish to keep your eyes peeled for the signboard, which is propped up on the ground of a narrow looking alley.

LET'S EAT
We ordered 3 ramyun dishes in total.
The side dishes are just the simple yellow radish (danmuji) and kimchi.
All their ramyun soup are made with beef bone stock and a special marinade! We ordered their signature Ojjam ramyun (오짬라면, 7700won). One bowl is pretty huge.
The Ojjam ramyun (오짬라면) includes squid clam, shrimp mushroom and various vegetables.
Next up, the Sundubu ramyun (순두부라면, 7700won)! This bowl includes clams, mushrooms, vegetables and soft tofu. Their tofu is really smooth and soft, which is right up my alley.
Lastly, we had the Budae ramyun (부대라면, 8800won). This bowl contains roasted kimchi, vegetables, sausage and ham!
Each bowl is of a different spice level. If we had to rate it in ascending order, in terms of spiciness, we would say:
1) Sundubu ramyun (mildest)
2) Ojjam ramyun
3) Budae ramyun (strongest)

Over all, I enjoyed the Ojjam ramyun the best, as its spice level was suitable for me. The noodles were tangy and nicely cooked. Just know that jjamppong is a spicy noodle soup, so if you can't take spice, you can also try their white jjamppong, which is the mildest version they have there.

The interior of the dining hall within a traditional house setting. Previously when I came here last April, it was all floor seats. But it has since changed to include proper dining tables and chairs.
In summary, my friends' jjamppong cravings were all satisfied and they thoroughly enjoyed the food here.

Holiday Inn Gwangju Hotel (홀리데이인 광주호텔) in South Korea

When I visited Gwangju, I booked Holiday Inn 홀리데이인 광주호텔 and had a really enjoyable stay.
Very very spacious lobby with warm and welcoming lights. The staff are welcoming. We visited the concierge 2 times to get them to call a taxi for us - free of charge / no extra taxi booking fees. They also provide a card with the Korean address we wish to go to, so we did not have to direct the taxi. When the taxi arrived, we just had to pass the card to the taxi driver and he will go off. :) The card also has the contact number and address of the Holiday Inn hotel, just in case.
A bar/cafe lounge. Again, spacious seems like the key for this hotel.
Our room! :) First thing we did - switch on the tv!
The King sized bed for the 3 of us. :)
Temperature system. Originally set at 22 deg celcius.
You can look into the toilet!
Peekaboo from inside the toilet! haha. While this feature is fun to have - but I don't really understand why the privacy blinds (no peekaboo) are located outside, where it can be operated by the people waiting outside - aka your roommates. Shouldn't the privacy blinds be operated by the person who is inside the toilet?
The toilet is very comfortable and spacious. With floors that don't send a chill up your feet, fitted with a shower (i rather standing showers than bathtubs) and bidet toilet. I also love that the shower uses Grohe - my favourite brand in shower heads. The comfort level of the water spray is just... lovely and comforting - especially when you return from the winter weather outdoors.
Simple liquid body soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner, body lotion are provided.
Happy to note that more and more hotels are being environment conscious, and this hotel is one of them.
You can choose between the soft or the firm pillows, but both, in my opinion, are not up to my level of firmness. 2 'firm' pillows could work better.

The exclusive hotel facilities for those who stay in the hotel.

The lovely indoor swimming pool. No diving here, of course. Its depth is only 1.5metres (4.92ft).
The gym is big and spacious, with many fitness equipment available.
A room for you to do your weights! :)
Overall, I liked enjoyed the hotel stay and the facilities looked nice, spacious and clean!

CCA Korean Hair Salon 까 헤어샵: Smoothing my frizzy hair

I just came back from South Korea, where the weather is cold and dry. So, I decided to go for a hair makeover session at CCA Korean Hair Salon.

They also have 7 shops within Seoul, with Myeongdong's branch being its headquarter branch. If you'd like to know, here is their Korean name: 까 헤어샵 (kka hairshop). Pronounced 'Kka', but to them, their translation for it is 'CCA'. :)
If you go to their website (the Singapore one, of course), you will find that it functions just like an online shopping website, which is very cool! Here, you can also shop for items based on your needs, for eg.: Woman's style, Men's style, Hair colour (yes, you can shop for the colour you actually want!) and Hair products!

The buying process is simple:
1. Select the type of hair makeover style.
2. Checkout with the item.
3. Make an online payment.
4. Make an appointment online following your confirmed payment.
5. Turn up at the salon for your scheduled appointment.

Of course, you can also go online to choose the hairstyle you wish to have, then save it in your phone and let the stylist know whenever you are free to walk-in. Free and easy.

Far East plaza has so many hair salons on the same floor. It took me some time to locate CCA as I was trying to look around to ensure it was the right one I walked into. Turns out, it was at the most obvious place: facing the atrium.

When I stepped in, I was greeted warmly and was served with my favourite drink: Iced americano!

Yes, they have a mini 'cafe' thing in their salon, where they serve free drinks for customers, in a takeaway cup! Drinks are standard, like hot/iced americano, iced tea, water.

Hairstylists were fresh in the Singapore scene as they were previously working in  the CCA Hair Salon in Seoul. Yes, this brand is genuinely from Seoul, people.
Photo of my hair before I visited the salon (blur shot, sorry! >,<)
I actually wanted to do a perm. But after consultation and checking of my hair texture, my stylist Daniel, suggested that I just settle with a long overdue hair dye and treatment session. I went along with it happily as I didn't want to damage my hair further.
Taken at the salon - with my handphone cos my camera died on me :( My hair looks limp, dry and damaged.

As my hair was badly damaged and frizzy (my genes, *cry*), they decided to use the Haohnico programme (하오니코 크리닉), a Korean hair product brand, for the treatment. Here's pretty much how it all went down:

1. They washed my hair with Econico shampoo and warm water first.
2. Then applied the essence on my hair thoroughly.
3. They then used a machine to ensure the essence is infused into the hair strands.
4. Washed my hair and dried it.
5. Put on a special lotion and let it set. Thereafter, washing it out totally.
6. Style with dryer, and we're done!

Photo of step 1
Photo of step 2
Photo of step 3

Step 6, we're done!

The entire process took about 1 hour.
Group shot! My stylist was Daniel, the only guy in the photo :)
Here's the 'after' shots, yes, taken during different time frames after enduring an entire day in the office!

Day 3 after hair treatment

Hair is much healthier looking, and easier to manage.

Day 7 after hair treatment

I also dyed my hair to a dark cocoa brown - but somehow, the colour didn't show up much, only under the sun it is more visible. My hair does look much healthier now. :)

Taken in the sunlight, 1.5weeks after the treatment.
But after one entire week, it was proven that my hair had become easier to manage, and I really did not see much frizz. You know, those curly baby hairs that stick out by themselves, like they were repelled by the tribe? Yes, most of those suckers stayed down! YAY!

I foresee myself going back for treatments as I really did enjoy the after effects of it, which gave me smoother locks! So... thank you CCA! :)

Museums in Gwangju (광주의 박물관)

One of the attractions you should visit in Gwangju are their museums. Hence, that was part of our itinerary! First stop: the Gwangju National Museum.

From our hotel, we took a taxi there. Taking a taxi is still our first choice, as it is still quite affordable and less hassle. It was easy to do so as we just got the hotel concierge to help us make a taxi booking (without extra booking charges).

It might be confusing and difficult for those who travel to Gwangju for the first time, or have difficulties understanding / speaking the Korean language, as you will have to take the train, then walk to the U-Square terminal before taking a bus.

Here, we got to see many historic items, as the exhibition here focuses on Prehistoric and Ancient culture.
Horse-shaped earthenware

We were introduced to one of the English speaking volunteer museum guides, Mr Yun Soo-Woong (윤수웅선생님). A retired principal, we had a great time navigating the museum with his guidance.

Here's one of my favourite item, Knobbed comma-shaped jade (딸린곱은옥, 母子曲玉), so beautiful and exquisite, in my opinion. This jade was from the Kohun period. Really lovely.

We also got to view Korea's national treasure number 103,Stone Lantern Decorated Twin-Lions (쌍사자석등, 双狮子石燈), a stone lantern which shows of 2 stone lions full of strength, like pillars of support. The item dates back to the Unified Silla era, 9th century.

Mr Yun also explained each level of the structure, and each level has a meaning, like how one lion has its open wide open, while the other has its mouth closed, signifying the beginning and the end. We appreciated the structure so much better after his detailed explanation.

Group shot!

Thank you Mr Yun. We really learnt so much from you - hope to see you again! :)

Next stop: Gwangju Museum of Art!
While walking past the Biennale Hall.
Along the way to the Museum of Art, we chanced upon the folk museum. It looked big and lovely. Too bad, due to the lack of time, we skipped it.

Entrance.

When we visited, one of the exhibitions was Incomplete Dream (강철수-미완의 꿈) by late painter, Kang Cheol-Soo (1951-2014).
I enjoyed viewing his paintings, how it transitioned in different periods of his life, as well as the showcase of his room while he was studying away from his sweetheart.

Here's a picture of his workspace.

The exhibition also showcased his handwritten letters back home, the emotions of his homesickness were translated so well to its viewers.

The exhibition runs from 1 Sept 2015 - 24 January 2016.

Scinn Medical Centre by Mary Chia (BBL broadband light treatment review)

First blog post of 2016, and I'm happy to share this with you!
A brand new year brings about renewed skin. It took a while but good things that need to be shared should still be shared no matter how long it takes. I was offered to undergo their BBL broadband light treatment and I am glad I took it!

Previously, I had attended Scinn Medical Centre's official opening and was introduced to a live demonstration of their star facial: Ultherapy®, which is a non-invasive procedure meant to help lift and tighten skin naturally.

I did not manage to get a good photo because it was too crowded, but I saw that the lady's skin was instantly lifted and her double chin became smaller!

This process can last about 1 - 3 years, depending on your age. Yes - means you don't have to do it so often. This process can only be performed by a licensed doctor, so you are in pretty safe hands.

Managed to get photos of the food served during the opening, though:

About the centre:
Scinn Medical Centre (Scinn) provides a 360 degree experience through bespoke medical aesthetic solutions for face and body. The centre is home to many ground-breaking FDA-approved technologies and treatment equipment. Clients can have access to a wide range of treatments, combining medical expertise and supervision for a more holistic lifestyle.
They are also under the umbrella for the Mary Chia group.

Was led to this room for my treatment.

The BBL broadband light treatment aims to lighten freckles, pigmentation, help with hair removal and reduce sebum. Which was exactly what I needed, because I have cute freckles to prove for it.

A photo of my cheeks (before) - see all those brown spots, those are my cute freckles:

First up, they will remove your makeup for you, then prep your face with a cooling gel. One thing I always do at facials, is to tell them that I am wearing contact lens. So they will be more careful with the areas around your eyes. Of course, if you can remove your contact lens, that would be optimal.

The doctor then came in and gave me a quick consultation. Same thing as the Ultherapy® treatment, the BBL treatment should also be handled by an authorised medical doctor at Scinn.

The doctor who performed the session for me was Dr Loo Han Woen. The number of sessions and continuation for each person differs, based on their skin condition and concerns. So just check with the doctor during the consultation process.

Time for the treatment, but no photos, as the light is very bright!

After the treatment, they applied a ginseng mask for me, which helps with moisturising, anti-aging and brightening.
After removal of the mask, I did immediately see dark spots on my skin where the freckles used to be. I was advised to take care of those areas carefully. The dark spots are scabs, which are formed as the freckles have been 'burnt' away. Once the scabs fall off (and it will, naturally), your sun spots / pigmentation will be lighter. This, however, is not a permanent process. But it will last some time anyway.

Day 2 after the treatment: Still with scabs

Day 4: Some scabs have fallen off, but dark spots (scabs) still clearly visible.

Day 6: Most of the scabs have fallen off! The treatment managed to get rid of my dark spots.

Day 8: All gone! Woohoo!

Taking care of the skin after the treatment is also crucial, as your skin will feel a little more dry and sensitive. Hence it's better to have a moisturising and soothing cream, and slap on more sunscreen!

Here's the products I relied on so much during the ' scab-skin days'.
1. DermaGold's Hydra Recovery Gel (which contains Aloe Vera, a soothing element)
2. Dr. Benjamin Yim's Sunscreen (SPF 50) (light and non-sticky)

My face without freckles are so clear! Awesome! Here's a photo I took while cruising.

Summary:
- Works well but you also have to take care of it well after the treatment. They will teach you how.
- During the process, there is a slight painful sensation, especially when it targets your pigmentation areas. But the pain is very bearable and quick to come and go.
- You might smell some burnt smell as the machine goes over your face, that is the smell of the oil being burnt away from your face. This gives it clearer pores and less sebum secretion.
- My skin is really clearer, and it did give me clear skin. Although I don't feel much difference with the sebum reduction, but I do have cleaner pores.
- I did like the treatment, which took an overall 1 hour (including consultation and completion)

LET'S EAT
First up, drinks: Lychee Tea ($11), hot. I used to think better of their drinks, hence I decided to try this, again. Wrong move. Despite waiting for the tea to steep, etc, this blend was bland! I do not know what went wrong with this that day, but it is really not possible for tea to go wrong.
My friend ordered the Monet ($12) which was French Rose Tea with Champagne Vanilla Gelato. There is nothing artistic about the taste. The server, poured the French Rose Tea into the cup, mixing the ice-cream flavour with the tea, yes, it's the tea version of affogato.
The taste did not leave a lasting impression on me, and certainly not worth the $12 too. Rose teas are light, and with the coldness of the ice and the milkiness of the icecream, it dilutes the taste further. My two cents: I would have preferred if they used a stronger tea, so when the cream marries the heavier flavoured tea, the process of the ice dilution would make the drink just nice.
La Quesadilla ($17) - smoked turkey jam with fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, roma tomato, fresh basil and homemade Thai mayo sauce. I recall not enjoying the price of this dish, as the serving was a small slab of 5 quesadillas. Even so, I did like its flavour, though not the best I've had.
Louisiana Love-Chicken and Waffles ($22) - Buttermilk chicken tossed with Thai Mango, rockets and served on whole-wheat waffles. Not a bad dish but not awesome. I don't love the chicken, but I like it. The chicken was flavourful, but the waffles were plain.
Dessert time! Ode to Nectar ($12) - Premium gelato served with Honey Chocolate Mi-Cuit. The Chocolate Mi-Cuit wasn't a let-down (thank goodness), but the gelato was plain so-so. Most flavours we wanted were out of stock, so I had no choice but to go with what they had to offer. The mi-cuit was rich, though the sweetness of honey was not felt through the overwhelming rich chocolate flavour.

In summary, rather than coming here for a meal, I would rather spend my money and time doing art jamming at this place, which seems to offer more solace through painting than through the tummy. The food here is relatively on the pricey end and I did not feel that it was worth the calorie spend. The wait staff was literally confused too; they didn't know what was going on, or what was their signature dishes. I was utterly disappointed.
Lady doing her painting at the boutique cafe.
Did I just go during the wrong time, on the wrong date and met the wrong wait staff? But then again, one bad experience is enough to deter me from ever going back. In the food service line, sadly, that's just all it takes to lose a customer forever. And they lost me, forever.

If you still wish to visit, I have kindly still included their details at the bottom of the post.

LET'S EAT
Lime juice with plum. We ordered this with their recommendation. I loved this thirst quencher! Sorry I didn't get the price, but this should be affordable anyway. Great for the sweltering heat!

Prawn paste chicken 虾酱鸡 ($12, $24) - We of course got the $12 version, as there was just 2 of us. The portion is huge! But would be just nice for sharing between 4 people, unless you have a huge appetite, in that case, share amongst 3 people.
Remember to squeeze the lime over the chicken before starting to eat. The lime gives it a nice zing which adds to the tender, succulent flavour of the dish.

Big Prawns Hor Fun 大虾滑蛋河粉 ($16, $32, $48) - Like its name (in Chinese), this dish is really smooth! Alas, it did not seem eggy, but the flavour was pretty good and I enjoyed the sauce. The prawns were big, but not many (just 3 prawns). It did feel a little MSG-y, if you know what I mean.

Fish Head Soup 鱼头汤 ($6, $12 $18) - I wanted to order the sliced fish soup (because I really don't like dealing with bones in the fish head), but ordered too quickly so I ended up with the fish head soup. The fish was really delicious and tender. I enjoyed the soup (though it also tasted a little MSG-y). The fish really did it for me, and I suggest you get the sliced fish version (check with them and make sure there are no bones), especially if you are visiting with children. There are really alot of bones in this one!

Overall, the prices here are slightly on the higher end for Zi Char places, but I did like the food here which was flavourful. Also I suggest you come here with more people so you can try more food, because they do have other signature dishes that seems like a must-try! :)
